Halfmoon Betta Fish (Betta splendens)

Halfmoon Bettas  (Betta splendens) also known as Siamese fighting fish features a variety of bright colors and a tail in the shape of a half moon. One of the prettiest freshwater fish you can put in your aquarium.

The Siamese fighting fish, or betta, is a vibrantly-colored fish often seen swimming solo in brandy sniffers and ornamental vases in both the office and home.

They should be taken care of like other Betta fish.

Bettas are a member of the gourami family and are known to be highly territorial.

Males bettas are prone to high levels of aggression and will attack each other if housed in the same tank.  They are devoted fathers who build bubble nests for their young with their mouths and fiercely protect their babies from predators.

Female bettas can also become territorial towards each other if they are placed in too small an aquarium.

It is typically not recommended to keep male and female bettas together, except temporarily for breeding purposes which should always be undertaken with caution.

Betta fish are native to Asia, where they live in the shallow water of marshes, ponds, or slow-moving streams.

Bettas active during the day and sleep at night, requiring darkness to get a good night’s rest.

  • Bettas can live up to 3 years
  • They grow up to 3 inches long
  • Bettas can sometimes live with other peaceful community fish. However, you should only have one male or female betta in a tank without dividers and be prepared to remove the betta if they show signs of aggression towards other fish.
  • Bettas gulp air from the surface of their tank.
